Drag racing became popular only after World War II.  It started as a hobby of men coming back from the war.  They get so hooked into this hobby that it eventually became a sport and the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) was founded by Wally Parks in 1951.

Basically, drag racing is a contest where two drivers in two separate vehicles, race side by side at a short distance varying from ¼ – 1/8 mile.  The mechanics is simple: the first vehicle to cross the finish line is the winner of the race.

Drag racing counts on mental and physical skills in order to gain an advantage over the other driver.   Here some tips on how to improve your focus and skills in this popular sport:

  1. Do exercises that will increase your reaction times.  When in the game, be sure that all your muscles are relaxed.  For if you are tense, it will take longer for your body to respond to the signals sent from your brain.
  2. Stay in shape.  This is another way to increase your reflexes.  If you are physically fit, your muscle memory will help your body respond quickly and sharply.
  3. Do some hand and eye coordination exercises to improve or refine your motor skills.
  4. Make sure your head is in the game.  You need to be able to truly concentrate on the tasks at hand in order to have better control of your outcome.  Pay attention to your body’s signals and your surroundings.  If you are nervous, it can affect your driving skills and reaction time.
  5. Learn to be mentally in control of your responses to the stresses in your environment so that you will be prepared to do the right thing at the right time.
  6. Improve your visual perception.  It may be another aspect of racing but it is also highly important.  Your eyes help you interpret and analyze a situation.  Online games can help you improve your visual memory, differentiation and sight consistency.
  7. Read car articles and watch street racing videos will also help you gain insights and learn about the techniques of the pros in street racing.
  8. Aim to get the prize.  People who stay positive and have a winning attitude are more likely to succeed than a person who doubts and suffers negative outlook.

Bear in mind that that drag racing is a sport of focus and confidence.  Taking time to improve your skills and focus will get you far on this sport.
